Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has promised, if elected president, to finish the construction of the National Cathedral, pointing to the substantial amount of state monies already committed to the project.

Originally planned to be privately funded, the project has become a contentious issue as it became apparent that over GHC339 million in state monies had been utilized.

At a Sunday, August 25, media appearance, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the project’s completion and the amount of money invested.

He suggested consulting with interested parties, such as churches, to decide on the best course of action and look into possible funding sources.

Dr. Bawumia emphasized the necessity for in-depth talks with church leaders and stakeholders and added that the design might need to be reevaluated to achieve completion.

“National Cathedral is a very important issue because taxpayers’ monies have gone into it and many people would like to see it completed. And I believe I should have engagement with the stakeholders and all the churches for us to see how best to get the funding to complete the project.”

“But I think that we need to sit down and talk if the design has to be looked at again to make it completed, we have to put everything on the paper. But I’ll be minded more by the churches and the church leaders and the discussions we need to have with them on the way forward.”
