The leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has promised to sign the anti-LGBTQ bill into law should the Supreme Court rule that it is lawful.
The Osu Traditional Council and the bill’s principal proponent, Samuel Nartey George, have called for accelerated processes in response to the bill’s delays, which are currently pending a court verdict.
In order to avoid sending the law to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for assent, the Supreme Court decided to hold off on ruling on the injunction motions. Instead, the ruling would be released concurrently with the final judgement. In a recent media engagement, Dr. Bawumia affirmed that he would promptly sign the bill once it receives constitutional clearance.
He stated,

“I think that is very, very important. The Bill is before the Supreme Court right now and I think there are certain challenges that have been made to it that is to say that it’s not consistent with the constitution.”
“Of course, we’ll wait for it to come and once it’s out of the Supreme Court and they declare it as constitutional, I believe signing is automatic, there shouldn’t be any issue. No ifs and no buts, we won’t allow.”
