Dr. John Kwakye, Director of Research at the Institute of Economic Affairs, has contested President Akufo-argument Addo’s that the Finance Minister has performed well and hence cannot be fired, arguing that Finance Ministers must always be held accountable for a country’s economic issues.
In a tweet, the economist and former member of the Bank of Ghana’s Monetary Policy Committee stated that because Finance Ministers are responsible for handling the finances of any country, they must accept responsibility for any mess that is produced.
“Finance Ministers must always be held responsible for a country’s economic problems no matter the source. Kwesi Kwarteng is a clear example”.
Dr. Kwakye also stated that the IMF and World Bank are not the solutions to the country’s problems.
“The answer to our problems doesn’t lie in Washington. It lies right here in Ghana”.
Concerning the cedi’s free slide, Dr. Kwakye asked for immediate intervention to slow its depreciation.
“Urgent interventions are needed to stop the hemorrhaging of the cedi”.
