‘Run, run, run’ – Chelsea star Moises Caicedo gives critical appraisal of Mauricio Pochettino’s tactics.

WHAT HAPPENED?
Pochettino took over as Chelsea manager in the summer of 2023, after Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital parted ways with Graham Potter. The Blues’ ownership instantly spent the bank for their new manager, purchasing players like Nicolas Jackson, Romeo Lavia, Christopher Nkunku, and Caicedo, whose transfer fees smashed Premier League records.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Despite the enormous signings, Pochettino’s Chelsea struggled, and Caicedo was one of the most underperforming players despite showing a lot of promise at Brighton. However, the Ecuadorian has now provided a detailed evaluation of what went wrong with his performance at Stamford Bridge.

WHAT CAICEDO SAID
Speaking to Radio La Red, Caicedo said [via Chelsea.News]: “At Brighton, it was all tactical, just with the ball; tactical, tactical, tactical. And at Chelsea, it was run, run, run and it was very difficult for me.

“With Chelsea, I always ran a bit more and with Brighton we almost always had the ball, with Chelsea it was a different football and we had to run more.”

The Ecuadorian also spoke about how he decided to approach his poor form: “Since February my agent hired a person who reviews my matches and what I have to improve, how to position myself and mentally.

“It’s helped take pressure off me because I was thinking more about ‘they paid a lot of money for me I have to perform well’.

“I wasn’t focused, not showing my level, after my agent hired that person, I started to improve and gain more confidence.”

WHAT NEXT FOR CAICEDO?
Following Pochettino’s departure, Enzo Maresca was appointed as the new Chelsea manager last month, and Caicedo hopes that the appointment of the former Leicester City manager will mark a turning point in his career.
