Should he be elected president in the next elections, former president John Dramani Mahama has vowed to uphold press freedom and has harshly denounced the intimidation of journalists.
He conveyed his extreme concern about the rise in recent years in the number of harassment cases that have occurred in the nation against journalists.
Speaking to media on Sunday in Accra, Mr. Mahama stated that a free press was essential to a democratic society and that intimidation of journalists was an assault on democracy.
To guarantee that this kind of harassment stops, he so promised to communicate with relevant parties.
“I am not going to condone or conjure to harass journalists when they do the work that they have been mandated to do,” he stated.
He added “We are going to sit together and work on the laws” that need amendments to help the work of journalists.
