Though he was rejected by Charterhouse and the VGMA board for carrying a gun on stage, Stonebwoy, the recently crowned TGMA “Artist of the Year,” believes he earned the coveted Artist of the Year award in 2019 at the VGMAs.
The Dancehall/Reggae performer begged Charterhouse to reveal the 2019 Artist of the Year winner during his acceptance speech at the recently concluded 25th Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA), as he firmly believed he was the winner.

In addition, he was the recipient of additional honors in the categories of Record of the Year, Album/EP of the Year, and Reggae/Dancehall Artiste of the Year.
At the 20th VGMAs, Stonebwoy and his crew were on stage accepting his award for Reggae/Dancehall Artiste of the Year when Shatta Wale and his gang were observed furiously approaching the stage. This led to a near-physical incident between Stonebwoy and his then-rival.
The public denounced the regrettable occurrence that spoiled the 20th anniversary festivities of the award, and the two were later apprehended by the police following the ceremony.
The VGMA board unanimously voted at the conclusion of the night not to give any of the nominated artists the overall Artist of the Year award, and as a result, Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy were suspended for a number of years.
