The executive director of Africa Education Watch, Kofi Asare, is pleading with the police to arrest Gborbu Wulomo for forcibly marrying a minor.
The 63-year-old Gborbu Wulomo, Nuumo Borketey Laweh XXXIII, came under fire after a video showing him weding 12-year-old Naa Okromo surfaced online.
The crowd-pleasing traditional marriage ceremony took place in Nungua on Saturday, March 30, 2024.
In defense of himself, Gborbu Wulomo said that the girl would not be required to perform marital duties.

But a furious Kofi Asare emphasized that Wulomo’s defense is not relevant to the law.
On April 1, he claimed in a Facebook post that it is against the law to marry a girl who is younger than sixteen. The law doesn’t care about the justification why she won’t be carrying out her marital obligations. Now, the police need to apprehend Nungua Wulomo and his associates.

The 12-year-old girl and a traditional ga priest are merely engaged, not married, according to the GaDangme Council’s clarification. The Council stated it had discussions with Gborbu Wulomo and a few of his elders in a statement released on Monday, April 1, and signed by its president, Ayikoi Otoo. It’s “important to clarify that the traditional ruler has stated that the relationship with the underage girl is a betrothal and not a marriage. This distinction to us has altered the legal implications.”“We are inclined to side with the Gborbu Wulomo since the original reportage made the point that there was another ceremony that awaited the girl to purify and prepare her for procreation.”
