Students in some elementary and junior high schools in New Juaben South Municipality in the Eastern Region are still stranded as the three teachers’ unions’ indefinite strike, which was met with mixed reactions, enters day three.
On November 4, 2022, three teacher unions, the Ghana National Association of Teachers, the National Graduate Teachers, and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers, declared an indefinite nationwide strike to protest the appointment of Dr. Eric Nkansah as the new Director-General of the Ghana Education Service.
The Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations is currently holding its second meeting with the teacher unions in order to bring the strike action to a close.
A visit to a few schools revealed that some basic schools in the New Juaben South Municipality had been closed, while others had students playing around.
It also revealed how, as the strike action continues, students have resorted to trading the markets to make money for themselves.
Some parents were also concerned that the strike would force their children into trading, which is a dominant and lucrative job in the area.
At a press conference in Accra today, the unions that claimed Dr. Nkansah was a banker and not a professional teacher declared a strike.
The Ghana National Association of Teachers, the National Association of Graduate Teachers, and the Ghana Coalition of Concerned Teachers are the unions.
