Liverpool are rumoured to be looking for a backup goalkeeper, with Hannover praising the “good rumour” that Ron-Robert Zieler is interested in joining the Reds.

Questions have been raised over whether Republic of Ireland international Caoimhin Kelleher may try to leave Anfield in pursuit of regular game time next summer, while veteran Spanish shot-stopper Adrian is set to become a free agent in 2023. This could push Jurgen Klopp to bring in more support for first-choice Alisson, with former Manchester United academy graduate Zieler reportedly on his radar.

With Zieler’s contract expiring in Germany, Hannover coach Stefan Leitl told Bild of reports that his captain may be returning to England: “He has played [himself] into focus.” It’s a good rumor to link Hannover 96 to Liverpool. My captain is Ron. The game [against Fortuna Dusseldorf on Tuesday] is the priority.”

Zieler joined United’s youth ranks in 2005 and spent five years with the club, playing for their U18 side and on loan at Northampton before joining Hannover for the first time in 2010 without making a senior appearance. He returned to English football in 2016, but only appeared in 11 games for the Foxes before returning to Germany after one season at the King Power Stadium.

Liverpool are anticipated to reinforce their ranks during the January transfer window before turning their eyes to the likes of Zieler, as injuries have contributed heavily to unusual issues for consistency in 2022-23.
