On August 9, 2022, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo paid a visit to Global Almas Processing Limited in Bimbilla, in the Northern Region, a facility that processes yam and cassava.
Michael Okyere Baafi, Member of Parliament for New Juaben South and Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry, explained to the President during a tour of the factory how the business had made use of the readily available local raw materials in Nanumba and the area to process yam and cassava flour for both domestic and international markets.
The Deputy Minister claims that Global Almas has a land bank in Bimbilla of more than 2,000 acres and that more property would be purchased as operations expand in response to an anticipated rise in product demand. Additionally, he pointed out that the plant buys 10,000 yams daily to create 1,000 cartons of Yam Fufu Flour every day under the brand name Almas Yam Fufu Flour.
On the cassava processing line, about 200 bags of cassava flour are produced each day. The company works with about 20 farming organizations that have agreed to supply the factory. The New Juaben South MP added that the factory’s overall cost is estimated to be GH9.2 million, with the promoter contributing 60% of that amount, or roughly GH5.2 million.
Additionally, a credit facility worth GH1 million (10.8% of the total project cost) was issued by the Ghana Exim Bank and disbursed in February 2021. More than 74 direct employment have already been established by Global Almas, including management, supervision, food science, laboratory technician, maintenance technician, and women working as yam/cassava sorters, cleaners, baggers, and attendants at sewing machines.
More than 400 more indirect jobs, including those for out-growers, transporters, harvesting teams, packing & handling, sales outlets, etc., have also been generated. To supply 1,000 tons of cassava chips each month, the business has already inked a contract with Sinostone Ethanol Manufacturing Company in Juapong.
For the supply of a 40-foot container of yam fufu flour every month for export to the US market, an agreement has also been reached with Bofas Company Limited in Wa.
