The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s National Executive Council (NEC) will meet on January 2, 2025, to discuss a number of crucial issues following the 2024 national elections.
This conference, which will take place at the party’s headquarters in Accra, will be the NEC’s first official session since the party’s crushing setback in the December 7 general elections.

The electoral outcome has paved the way for deep analysis and strategic planning as the party adjusts to its new status as a parliamentary minority.
According to party sources, one of the key agenda issues for the upcoming meeting will be the leadership structure of the minority front in the 9th Parliament. This topic has caused widespread debate among party members, with varying perspectives on the next steps as the NPP navigates its new parliamentary position.
Joseph Osei Owusu, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Bekwai and First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, is one of several voices weighing in on the subject.
Osei Owusu, along with other party leaders, has actively lobbied for the retention of Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the current Majority Leader, in a leadership position.

Many believe that Afenyo-Markin’s experience, political acumen, and ability to build party unity make him a perfect candidate to head the NPP as Minority Leader in the next Parliament.
The decision on minority leadership is expected to be contentious, since it has far-reaching ramifications for the party’s capacity to project strength, unity, and influence in the ninth Parliament.
In addition to addressing parliamentary leadership, the NEC is expected to debate other critical issues, including as the reasons for the party’s electoral failure, the reorganization of party structures, and measures for reconnecting with the grassroots.
