In order to counteract misinformation and deception before the general elections, the National Media Commission (NMC) said it plans to release a media watch app.
The initiative’s goal, according to the NMC, is to empower individuals and media to document suspicious activity at polling places in real time so that swift action may be taken.
The initiative will be a vital tool in promoting peaceful elections and improving journalist safety, according to NMC Executive Secretary George Sarpong, who made this statement following a forum hosted by the Institute of Democratic Governance (IDEG) with the theme “Moderating the Airwaves for Peaceful and Credible Elections 2024.”
George Sarpong, the NMC’s executive secretary, thinks the project would be an important instrument for encouraging peaceful elections and improving journalist safety.
He clarified that the app will be revolutionary and is anticipated to provide precise information at different voting places throughout Ghana.
“This is going to be a game-changer in the sense that it is going to offer us very accurate information about what is happening around the country about the elections.
“And then in terms of the electoral results, if anybody who is at any polling station at the time we are declaring the results, films and submits this, the system can verify the authenticity of what has been submitted.
“We believe that if there is any dispute regarding any incident, this will offer very efficient evidence for anybody interested in understanding exactly what happened there and to address it.”
