Vice Chancellor of UCC appeals court order extending his tenure

Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, the vice chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, has filed an appeal against a High Court decision that prevented him from carrying out his duties in that capacity.

This comes in response to a request made by John Mevemeo to deem the University of Cape Coast’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, to be unable to serve another term.

In 2020, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong was appointed Vice Chancellor for a term of three years, with the possibility of extension. To that end, the university governing body extended his contract for a further three years prior to its expiration in July 2023.

However, John Mevemeo, the case’s applicant, filed a request to revoke the contract extension.

He argues that because Prof. Nyarko’s renewal goes beyond his retirement, which is anticipated to start in 2025, the extension is illegal under both the 1992 constitution and university statutes.

John Mevemeo requested an injunction from the High Court to prevent Prof. Nyarko from carrying out his duties as Vice-Chancellor while the case was pending resolution.

On September 4, 2024, the injunction was granted by the court.

Prof. Nyarko has appealed the verdict because he feels that the trial judge made a mistake.

He contends that the injunction will impede the University’s ability to operate normally.
