WHAT HAPPENED?
De Gea ended his Manchester United career at the end of the 2022/23 season after the Red Devils opted not to renew his contract. After being out of action for more than a year, journalist Rudy Galetti reports that the Spaniard has conducted negotiations with Al-Shabab and another undisclosed Saudi Pro League team about a possible return to the sport.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
The former Manchester United captain left Old Trafford after a 12-year stint, having joined the 20-time Premier League winners from Atletico Madrid at the age of 21. After a tough start in life, De Gea rapidly became a fan favourite due to his outstanding performances in goal for the Red Devils. However, his form dwindled over the last few seasons, and as the Spaniard became a liability for the team, United opted to call it quits.
