The Ghana renal Association (GKA) applauded the government’s decision to provide free dialysis treatments to renal patients through the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), but encouraged it to make the support permanent.
The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) recently stated that patients under the age of 18 and above the age of 60 will receive all eight dialysis sessions per month for free from June 1 to December 31, 2024.
Patients aged 19 to 59 years old would receive two free dialysis sessions every month.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Ghana Kidney Association expressed gratitude and urged the government to extend support to all patient groups and make it a permanent element of the NHIS.
The Association also encouraged the government to make the draft legislative framework for organ transplants into law, claiming that it is the most cost-effective kidney replacement therapy.
Meanwhile, the group has highlighted worries about timely repayment for the services, citing recent delays in NHIA payments.
