Ghanaians have been urged by the African Center for Economic Transformation (ACET) to fight for the strengthening and repair of their country’s democracy.
Tyranny and autocracy, as an alternative to democracy, will be harmful to the nation’s development, according to ACET, and as such, they should be opposed.
The president of ACET, K.Y. Amoako, told the media during a workshop titled Compact Citizens’ Engagement that Ghana’s democracy is regarded as the best in Africa, thus Ghanaians should be proud of it and try to correct its flaws.
“We have had numerous regimes, including military dictatorships and one-man governments; these exist in other nations as well, but democracy is very important in my opinion. Individual liberty, press freedom, and the capacity to express oneself are necessary for growth
“But it is true that for a number of reasons, democracy is faltering around the world, not only in Africa. And as [Barack] Obama said, democracy can win if we fight for it. So to me, an alternative to democracy, autocracy, and one-man rule, people say is a strong man but you may not get the very strong man you want.
“So we need to have a good democracy. We have seen many African countries as a beacon of democracy in Africa. We have to be proud of that. And we need to fix what is not working.”
