Jachie community: After a devastating downpour, locals demand that power be restored

2 Min Read

A week after a severe rainstorm that left multiple people injured and one 16-year-old girl dead, the Jachie community in the Bosomtwi District of the Ashanti Region is still without electricity.

The storm, which hit on Thursday, May 16, 2024, knocked over power poles and damaged the neighborhood transformer, leaving most homes without power.

Due to the disruption to their livelihoods caused by the power outage, locals and business owners are finding it difficult to manage.

A homeowner who operates a grinding mill expressed regret, saying, “I have lost a lot of business. Friday is always a busier day for me because it’s our community’s market day and plenty of people come to mill their goods. But the power outage that started on Thursday has continued, so we are unable to work with electricity. The situation has been challenging for us.”

Richard Bimpeh, the assembly member for the Jachie East electoral district, has been attempting to bring the community’s power back.

He described how he had gone to the ECG branch in Bekwai and talked to the manager, who had told him that a note requesting poles was being written. It’s unclear exactly when power will be restored, though.

“Concerning the light, I’ve been to the ECG branch in Bekwai and spoke with the manager. He told me that they are now writing a memo for Poles. And as I’m talking to you, we don’t know when it’ll come.

“I’ve been to the Bosomtwe DCE office, I spoke with the PRO for ECG, and all they said was that there are no poles and there’s no water too. We are pleading with the authorities, especially ECG and NADMO, to come to our aid.”

To lessen their pain, the community is pleading with the authorities to restore power as soon as possible.
