In response to the recent spike in gasoline prices, the Transport Operators of Ghana and the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana have jointly announced an increase in transport fees, commencing Saturday, April 13, 2024.They announced the following changes in a statement released on Monday, April 8, 2024: a 15% increase for intracity or short-distance transportation, a 20% increase for long-distance or intercity transportation, a 15% increase for taxi services, and a 15% increase for short-distance taxi hire services, raising the fare from GHC 10.00 to GHC 15.00.The apparent absence of government action to lower the cost of gasoline, auto parts, and lubricants in spite of persistent economic difficulties served as the impetus for the decision.
“Twenty (20) percent for intercity or long journey transport, 15 percent for taxi transport and an increment from GHC 10.00 to GHC 15.00 fare for short distance taxi hire services.”
“Just as it may have been noted by most Ghanaians the government appears to be indifferent regarding any reduction in the price of petrol as well as those of vehicle spare parts and lubricants. Also, the prevailing economic difficulties and other factors are worsening the living conditions of transport owners and drivers,”They said.As a result, they implored Ghanaians to pay attention to the increase and work with transportation providers.
