Amazon Prime has bought a film shot in Ghana, reestablishing the country’s presence in the worldwide film industry.
Tiwa Savage, a Nigerian singer, plays the lead in the film ‘Water and Garri’.
The film follows Aisha, played by Savage, an aspiring fashion designer, as she returns to her hometown after a 10-year absence in the United States due to a family bereavement.
While back home, things changed as violence worsened and tensions rose as she reunited with family, old acquaintances, and her former love.
The film was filmed on Cape Coast, Ghana, and has riveting cinematography and narrative.
The drama also features Mike Afolarin (Far From Home), Andrew Bunting (Dynamite), and Jemima Osunde (New Money).
Ayanna Lonian, director of content acquisition at Prime Video, commented on the purchase of the exclusive rights to the movie.
“Audiences around the world are looking for well-made, contemporary African stories, and Water and Garri delivers that with a fresh perspective.”
“Both Meji Alabi, as film director, and Tiwa Savage, as the lead, have truly delivered a stellar debut alongside the rest of the incredibly talented cast and crew,” Ayanna added.
The Nigerian singer was likewise ecstatic about the acquisition. “Developing and shooting my film from an idea to launching globally on Prime Video is a dream fulfilled,” Tiwa Savage said in a statement.
“I am excited for my fans and newer audiences to experience this vulnerable side of me that I have never shown. Meji Alabi brought the story to life in such a beautiful way, and I cannot wait to share it with the world,” she added.
