The Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital renal unit’s administration has decided to reopen the facility to outpatient services on Tuesday, November 7.
The unit’s management has frequently failed to meet its own reopening deadlines.
On Friday, November 3, hospital administration agreed to reopen the unit on November 6, but has already broken that promise.
This shutdown, in place since May 22, 2023, has created tremendous difficulty for dialysis patients, requiring them to seek treatment elsewhere.
Last Thursday, Isaac Baah Ofei, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Health, told Citi News that Health Minister Kwaku Agyemang-Manu had ordered the unit to be reopened immediately. This instruction, however, has yet to be implemented.
Citi News’ Eno Safo visited the facility and discovered that it was still closed to OPD services as of 2 p.m. on Monday.
On Monday evening, managers gave patients a temporary assurance that the facility will reopen on Tuesday, November 7.
On Wednesday, September 27, the Unit reopened partially, and an increase in dialysis treatment each session from GH380 to GHS765.42 was announced.
The Minority’s health spokesman, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, chastised the Health Minister for failing to follow through on his instruction to reopen the facility.
Since its termination in May 2023 due to a GH4 million debt, 19 outpatients from the renal unit have died.
