Akosombo Dam spill: Flood victims can cast ballots in the DLE without a voter ID card — EC

2 Min Read

Victims of the Akosombo dam leak have been reassured by the Electoral Commission (EC) that plans are in place to allow them to take part in the next District-Level Elections, which are set for Tuesday, December 19, 2023.
Samuel Tettey, the Deputy Chairman in charge of Operations, clarified during a press briefing on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, under the title “Let the citizens know” that even if the impacted individuals had misplaced their voter ID cards, they would still be able to cast their votes as long as their names were correctly entered into the commission’s database.

“If it is the voter ID card that you have lost and your name is properly entered into the voter’s register, you can still vote without your voter’s ID card,” stated Mr. Tettey.
Samuel Tettey did stress that the flood victims’ ability to vote will be reliant on their ability to visit the appropriate polling places.

“The difficulty is that, if you go to the wrong polling station, you are going to waste everybody’s time because we may be going through the register and we may not be finding you. But if you go to the right polling station, your name will be on the register and you will be allowed to vote,” Tettey continued.
Prior to the District Level Elections (DLE), the Electoral Commission (EC) will display the provisional voter registration from Friday, November 3, 2023, until Tuesday, November 7, 2023.
During the exercise, the display will be held at each of the 38,622 voting places nationwide from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The exhibition’s goal is to provide potential voters a chance to confirm their personal information, such as name, age, sex, and voting place, and to request additions or changes if needed.

In addition, voters have the option to have the names of ineligible voters removed from the register or to object to their inclusion.
