A female teacher from Happy Royals International School in the Ashanti Region’s Asokore Mampong Municipality was hospitalized when a school bus somersaulted.
The driver lost control, nearly crashing into a drainage system at Sawaba New Site.
The driver and the injured teacher were returning to school after dropping off students who had been absent on Tuesday.
The part of road where the tragedy occurred is prone to flooding, and a bridge on the stretch has been broken down for years despite many requests from motorists to have it repaired.
“Potholes have inundated the section of the road and gullies have formed on the edges of the stretch due to erosion,” Mr. Walker said.
A one-year-old boy died in June 2021 after being carried away by floodwaters while riding his tricycle with his mother on a portion of road.
The broken bridge is located on a significant length of road going to the Asokore Mampong Municipal Assembly, which is visited by Assembly officials, including the Municipal Chief Executive.
Several schools are located in the vicinity, and pupils, as well as school buses, use the stretch on a daily basis.
According to residents and commuters, multiple accidents have occurred on the stretch due to poor road conditions.
They warned that the worst is yet to come if authorities do not rebuild the broken bridge and road.
