Following a grand jury indictment, Las Vegas officials announced the arrest of Duane Keith “Keffe D” Davis in connection with the 1996 shooting death of rapper Tupac Shakur.
Davis, now 60, was detained in Las Vegas early Friday morning.
Tupac Shakur, 25, was brutally shot while exiting a boxing fight on the Las Vegas Strip. He received four bullet wounds and died six days later.
This arrest comes two months after a July 17 police raid on Davis’s wife’s Henderson home.
Authorities presented Davis as the suspected mastermind behind a conspiracy to avenge an attack on his nephew by organizing Tupac Shakur’s murder during a news conference on Friday. Davis has stated in interviews and in his 2019 memoir, “Compton Street Legend,” that he was in the front seat of the white Cadillac that drew up next to Shakur’s automobile when shots were fired from the rear seat, killing the artist.
Duane “Keffe D” Davis has long been investigated as one of the case’s four initial suspects.
In addition, the grand jury has chosen to consider a gang activity sentencing enhancement, which could add up to 20 years to his sentence if he is convicted.
In a statement issued on Friday, the rapper’s sister, Sekyiwa “Set” Shakur, described the arrest as a watershed event.
She underlined the necessity of recognizing the impact of Tupac Shakur’s death on their community and demanded acknowledgement from the world, the country, the judicial system, and their people, emphasizing the tragedy of her brother’s death.
“This is no doubt a pivotal moment. The silence of the past 27 years surrounding this case has spoken loudly in our community,” she said. “It’s important to me that the world, the country, the justice system, and our people acknowledge the gravity of the passing of this man, my brother, my mother’s son, my father’s son.”
