Edwards’ side went 2-0 up in the first half at Goodison Park, thanks to goals from captain Tom Lockyer and Carlton Morris. Dominic Calvert-Lewin pulled one back for Everton just before half-time but the hosts were unable to find an equaliser as Luton secured their first away victory in the top flight since March 1991.
The win comes after Luton began the season with one draw and four defeats from their opening five league matches.
“The supporters deserve it (the win),” Edwards said. “Our board deserve it. They’ve really stuck with us.
“We’re on a brilliant journey and are going to enjoy this. But it’s important we give them something to shout about. I love the supporters — they’re amazing and have travelled a long way in the rain.
“I’m proud of the players and pleased for the club. I don’t want to sound arrogant but I expected it today.
“I told the players before the game it was going to be a good day and we really believed. I’ve believed that in all the games so far.”
Luton are now 17th in the Premier League and play their game in hand at home against winless Burnley on Tuesday. The Berkshire side have scored five goals in their six matches so far, as many as 15th-placed Chelsea and 12th-placed Fulham.
“A lot of work goes into it and I can’t take credit for it,” Edwards added. “There’s a lot of guys that put a lot of effort into set pieces and you saw how valuable they are.
“It’ll be good for belief and confidence. I’ve been banging on recently about how our performances have been getting better and we’ve been in the games. It was a tough start and we were well beaten, but we’ve adapted in the games since.
“We know we’ll get setbacks but I like the way we’re progressing. People will have their opinions but it’s down to us to show people we deserve to be here.”
