A soldier from the 5th Infantry Battalion was killed in what seems to be an unintentional shooting at the Base Ammunition Depot (BAD) near Michel Camp.
When the event happened on Saturday, August 19, 2023, Private (Pte) Bayou Roger, a member of the Southern Command, was on official duty.
According to early investigation findings from the Ghana Armed Forces, Pte Bayou was seated on his bed, ready to relieve a colleague at a duty position at 0800 hours when his weapon went off, striking him under his chin and killing him instantly.
The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) said in a statement that the soldier’s remains has been placed at the 37 Military Hospital morgue while investigations continue.

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) regrets to inform the death of Private (Pte) Bayou Roger of the 5 Infantry Battalion as a consequence of a suspected unintentional discharge.
Pte Bayou was part of a Southern Command platoon assigned to the Base Ammunition Depot (BAD) at Michel Camp.
The tragic occurrence occurred on Saturday, August 19, 2023, about 0750 hours at BAD.
According to the preliminary investigation report, the soldier was seated on his bed, ready to relieve a colleague at a duty station at 0800 hours when his weapon went off, striking him under his chin and killing him instantly.
Since then, the deceased soldier’s body has been sent to the morgue at the 37 Military Hospital.
In order to investigate the deadly occurrence, a team from the Homicide Unit of the Ghana Police (GBETSELE Police Station) is working with the Military Police.
