Ohemaa Mercy, a gospel musician, has revealed that she has earned barely GH300 in royalties from the Ghana Music Rights Organization (GHAMRO) over the last 16 years.
Despite having multiple hit songs, she claims she has only gotten GH300 from GHAMRO since 2007.
She mentioned that she was discouraged and hadn’t gone there in 16 years.
“I received GH¢300 in 2007 and since then, I have never received any money from the royalties-sharing agency,”She explained to Ghanaweekend.com.
She became dissatisfied with the way the group was run, according to her.
GHAMRO, which is in charge of royalties distribution, has had its license revoked, prohibiting it from carrying out its purpose.
The organization is in charge of collecting royalties for all rights holders in Ghana. Prior to 2005, the Copyright Society of Ghana had that function.
The organization has frequently been chastised for its lack of openness and stakeholder participation. Rex Omar led the group as of 2018.
