At Gomoa Okyereko, a head-on collision between a Youtong bus with the license plate GT 5866-L and a fuel tanker with the license plate WR 2063-10 resulted in the deaths of 16 persons.
Forty other patients were treated at the Trauma and Specialist Centre in Winneba for injuries of varying severity.
DO2 In an interview with Citi News’ Central Region correspondent Calvis Tetteh, Kwesi Hughes, the Municipal Fire Officer for Winneba, said it’s possible the driver was sleepy and weary at the time of the horrific accident.

The locked up people in the Youtong Bus were eventually freed by members of the Ghana National Fire Service, but the tanker’s mate passed away before they could free him.
The bus was moving from Abidjan to Buduburam, while the tanker was refueling and moving from Accra to Takoradi, according to DO2 Kwesi Hughes.
Along with the GNFS, the Ghana Ambulance Service and the Police Service are present and on-site, offering support and assistance.
