Charles ‘CK’ Akonnor reveals how someone did not want him to lead the Ghana national team and campaigned for his dismissal ahead of the Afcon in 2021.
On September 13, 2021, the tactician was fired after the Black Stars lost 1-0 away to South Africa in Group G’s 2022 World Cup qualifying.
The relocation occurred approximately four months before the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, which was subsequently held in Cameroon.
Milovan Rajevac was appointed 11 days later, returning to the team he had led in 2010.
His stay, however, was brief because Ghana performed poorly at Afcon, earning only one point in their group. Otto Addo took his post when the 67-year-old was shown the door.
The latter aided the Black Stars’ qualification for the World Cup in 2022.
Akonnor has now said that the alterations have damaged him and that there was foul play.
“[Being the head coach at the 2021 Afcon] was a dream, but somebody shut it down, who that person is, I don’t know,” Akonnor told Joy Sports’ Prime Take.
“I wouldn’t say so [I would have done better than Rajevac did], but I had a plan and if that plan had worked, maybe we would have done better than we did.”
“At least, the FA should have allowed me to go to the Afcon and come back because my contract was even running out. I was hurt, but I am better now.”
