Prof Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa, a former Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), says he is appreciative for the “numerous” goodwill messages and prayers he has received since his appointment was terminated by the president.
“What gladdens my heart is that the messages are not dirges… I highly appreciate your unfathomable love to me,” GES directors and personnel, stated in a letter.
He used the occasion to thank everyone who helped him improve the face of pre-tertiary education and the Service throughout his term, adding “we worked as a team.”
President Akufo-Addo canceled Prof Opoku Amankwa’s appointment and directed him to return to Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in a letter dated October 17, 2022.
One of the reasons cited for the decision was that “the exigencies that required [his] skills and expertise as Director-General of the Ghana Education Service do not exist any longer.”
Only two days after his dismissal, the president named Dr. Eric Nkansah as acting Director-General of the Service.
His appointment became effective on Wednesday, October 19, 2022, pending receipt of the constitutionally needed advice of the Service’s governing Council.
Prof Opoku-Amankwa, on the other hand, expresses delight at the “soothing and reassuring” remarks of the GES employees and the general public.
“I wish to take this opportunity to thank every one of you for your dedication and the extremely good work relationship that existed between us.
You supported me in many ways to enhance my resumé to bring it to a distinguishing first-class, world-class CV, and I am highly grateful to you all,” he added.
Disappointment
The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has expressed concern about President Akufo-Addo’s decision to fire the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES).
The development, according to NAGRAT, is unsatisfactory.
Angel Carbonu, the Association’s President, said in a television appearance on Tuesday that it has also left his members profoundly upset.
“This is very disappointing. We are surprised because we had someone who was able to build a very positive relationship and rapport with the union,” Mr. Carbonu said.
