Parliamentary Minority Caucus members of the Mines and Energy Committee have justified their choice to abstain from a stakeholder meeting regarding the ongoing Lithium Mining Agreement.
The agreement between the Ghanaian government and Barari DV was presented by Samuel Abu Jinapor, Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, in July 2024. It was then referred to the Lands and Natural Resources Committee for deliberation.
The Minority members’ decision to forego attending the meeting was motivated by the emergency session of Parliament held at the Accra International Conference Center, according to Ranking Member of the Committee Alhassan Suhuyini. Consequently, the meeting’s resolution would not be recognized.
“Because of the nature of today’s [Tuesday’s] sitting and the venue that has been chosen, consultation would have led to a rescheduling of the Committee meeting and that is what we had expected.
“But for some reason, the chairman of the committee unilaterally decided to go ahead with the meeting even though we were called to do business in the Chamber.
“And together with our leadership, we have decided to attach seriousness to the emergency recall… and to stay here and do business. And that is why you may realise later on that that committee meeting is made up of only members of the Majority.”
