Nana Ama McBrown, a prominent Ghanaian actress and TV program host, has made a personal appeal to the United States Embassy in Ghana to reconsider and overturn her travel ban, which was imposed over 20 years ago.
The appeal comes after the actress revealed in March 2023 that she was deported from the United States in 2001, a fact she had never previously discussed publicly.
McBrown discussed the difficult experience in an interview with Captain Smart during her welcome ceremony at Media General. She described how her uncle, who had recently returned from the United States, promised to take her overseas after recognising her athletic potential. Unfortunately, her ambitions were dashed when she was deported soon after arriving in the United States in January 2001.
“Captain, January is a month I don’t like at all because things really don’t go as expected for me. I’ve never said this anywhere before but today I’ll say it to inspire somebody. My uncle returned from the US and met me as a footballer who had returned from playing at Kwadaso (a suburb of Kumasi).
“I went to play table tennis after that so when my uncle saw me, he promised to take me abroad. Truthfully I was in America in January but to put it short, I was deported,” she revealed.
However, during an interview with Bola Ray on Starr Chat on Thursday, August 22, 2024, the screen goddess made a direct appeal to the American Embassy in Ghana, urging them to reconsider their decision. She emphasised that she has had a solid track record after the incident and is not a horrible person.
“And I’m begging them. Please, American Embassy, consider me again. When you look at my record, I’m not a bad person. I’ve never been a bad person. Because I really knew what I’ve done, and I wanted to correct it,” She pleaded.
The actress, who also works as an entrepreneur, used the occasion to warn Ghanaians about the risks of falsifying documents to obtain visas. She advised individuals to be real, warning that such behaviour might have long-term effects, including limiting future possibilities.
