Allegations that the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have vowed to seize power in the event that the impending elections in 2024 turn violent have been categorically refuted.
This reaction is in response to a publication that quoted Dr. Emmanuel Akwetey, the Executive Director of the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG), as making these assertions.
The GAF made it clear in a press statement on Friday, August 23, 2024, that they have never held a press conference announcing their plan to stage a coup.
The statement stressed that the Ghana Police Service might request assistance from the GAF, and that this help does not amount to the overthrow of the government.
“GAF has no intention to stage a coup and will prevent and resist any individual, group, or organisation seeking to unlawfully take over the power of government, either acting alone or in collaboration with any security agency,” declared Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie, Director General of Public Relations.
The media and civil society organisations were also urged by the press release to desist from inflaming political tensions with the name of GAF. All parties involved were urged by GAF to cooperate in order to guarantee a secure and tranquil atmosphere for the next elections in December 2024.
The GAF reaffirmed their dedication to maintaining calm and peace while urging all citizens to feel free and secure enough to carry out their legal activities.
