The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has disclosed that some followers of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) are privately asking for the party’s withdrawal from the 2024 general elections.
According to him, many NPP members fear the country is being hijacked by a small group of people at the expense of the general public.
Mr. Mahama added that unhappy NPP members are clamouring for his return to the presidency to allow the NPP to reorganise itself.
Addressing party supporters on his tour of the Upper East area over the weekend, the NDC flagbearer stated, “In Ghana, it is not the NPP, but a little family that has captured everything. And so, I can tell you that many of my NPP friends come to me and say, “NDC, you have to do well and get our party out of power.”
“These are NPP people because the NPP has been captured by a small group of people. This is not Kufuor’s NPP. This is a different NPP. It has been hijacked by some people and so the democrats and others in NPP want the party to lose. So that they can go back into opposition and reorganise.”
In a comparison with other African countries, he described Ghana’s economic hardship as “worse off.”
“Many people in Nigeria are on the streets demonstrating. You heard about Kenya, Kenyan youth are demonstrating because opportunities are not opening up for them. The situation in Ghana is worse,” he said.
