Four people—three Ghanaians and one Chinese national—have been taken into custody by the police on suspicion of installing and manipulating meters belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
The ECG meters were taken by agency Wisdom Sewlorm so they could be installed. However, Ernest Afatsawu, one of his employees, meddled with them and sold them for GH₵1200 to a Chinese plastic manufacturing company.
The Chinese company’s manager, Rulian Shan, and his sales manager, Ali Yakubu, were taken into custody on Friday, August 2.
After being called, Ernest and Wisdom are currently being looked into.
According to the ECG’s calculations, the financial losses for the months of July and August exceed GH₵77,000.00.
According to Paul Abariga, the Director in charge of Security, Prosecution, and Investigations, the four people will appear in court on Wednesday.
In addition, the ECG contractor’s contract will be terminated.
“There are meters that are being installed in many parts of our operational area and there have been some investigations reported to this directorate that some of the meters that are being installed are tempered with before they are installed so we undertook investigations, and we’ve come to realise that the intel that we’ve gathered, and the reports given to us are certainly true.
“Based on that we got for instance these four people arrested on four. They had a meter that was supposed to be residential and they were using it in a factory to manufacture plastic bowls at Oblogo near Weija.”
“So we want to put all the four together. By the end of the day we would have finished with our investigations on them so that we put them before court tomorrow,” he stated.
