The Minority’s invitation to the NPP flagbearer to participate in the discussion on the mid-year budget, according to Dennis Miracles Aboagye, Director of Communications for the Dr. Mahamudu Campaign Team, appears to be an attempt to protect John Dramani Mahama from Dr. Bawumia.
Following his request for a discussion with the NDC flagbearer, the Minority caucus in Parliament has asked Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to take part in the 2024 mid-year budget review debate.
On the other hand, Aboagye claims Vice President Bawumia is not required because the NPP has capable MPs prepared to debate their NDC counterparts.
“The vice president is really flattered with this initiative by the minority, especially when they lined up seven to eight people to come and debate just him. The fact is that, if this is the minority’s way of shielding the vice president from debating ex-president Mahama, that’s ok.
“Since when did parliament select people and line them up to debate one person on the floor of the house? Based on the set criteria, you know every debate has a rule, from the letter by the minority to the vice president, it’s quite obvious that the vice president may not have to bother.
“He has a lot more competent persons from the majority side who can handle these seven men from the minority side without him having to be there,” the Director of Communication for Dr Mahamudu Campaign Team said.
In the meanwhile, Dr. Bawumia owes Ghanaians an explanation about the performance of the government, according to Deputy Minority Whip Ahmed Ibrahim, which is why they invited him to the discussion.
“We know all the economic and financial records and indicators…he owes the good people of Ghana accountability for his seven and half years of stewardship.
“So, we’re not calling President Akufo-Addo to come, but we’re calling Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as chairman of the Economic Management Team, and as vice president of Ghana who has been given the mandate by article 111 in the constitution to come and do that constitutional mandate. It is not that we’re begging, he owes us that explanation.”
