Following a statement by the Volta River Authority (VRA) regarding another Akosombo Dam leak, chiefs and people residing in Mepe, in the Volta Region, are living in fear.
The VRA guarantees that this year’s spillage would be as little as possible because it started intensive community involvement ahead of time. The chiefs are still worried about the possible consequences, though.
Manklalo of the Mepe Traditional Area Togbe Korsi Nego IV stated his concerns on the upcoming spill. We have learned more depressing information this year regarding a potential controlled spill.
“Last year [2023], I suggested that committees be established to investigate and plan for future spillages, but nothing was done. We heard an inter-ministerial committee was set up,” he said.
“We have been hoping that the inter-ministerial committee would come to us, the affected people, and listen to our challenges. But up to now, we have not met with the committee,” Togbe Korsi Nego IV added.
