The National Peace Council (NPC) has formed a committee to oversee the Code of Conduct on Vigilantism and electoral Violence, which aims to avoid vigilantism and electoral violence in the run-up to the 2024 general elections.
The group, which includes officials from various political parties, is in duty of ensuring a violent free election in December.
At the National Peace Council’s maiden meeting in Accra on Wednesday, Chairman Ernest Adu Gyamfi detailed the committee’s responsibilities and expectations for a peaceful 2024 general election
“A, to take all necessary and appropriate steps within the competence of the members to ensure the realisation of the objectives of the code of conduct of political violence. B, to encourage and facilitate compliance with the code of conduct by NDC, NPP, and other political parties, their members, and affiliates. C, to monitor, receive, and address complaints about alleged breaches of the code of conduct. D, to take all appropriate steps in resolving conflict arising from the alleged violation of the code of conduct. E, to take such steps including consultations with the leadership of political parties in preventing or eradicating political violence.”
“F, to continuously sensitise and educate members of political parties on the dangers of politically related violence. G, to submit the findings and recommendations of the committee to the board of the National Peace Council for appropriate dialogue,” he stated.
Emma Binkorang, Director of Research at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre, spoke on behalf of all political parties present and committed to respect the responsibility of guaranteeing a violence-free election.
“On behalf of the committee of the Code of Conduct on Vigilantism and Elections Violence, we hereby accept the terms of reference that have been bestowed upon us, and we pledge our commitment to these terms of reference.”
“We also pledge that we will ensure together with the political party members, that the elections, upcoming elections in December 2024 are successful.”
