A 24-year-old guy who stole an artiste’s laptop after offering him a somewhere to sleep has been sentenced to 12 months in prison by an Accra Circuit Court.
He snatched an HP laptop valued at GH¢3,500. David Boateng was accused with theft and pleaded guilty.
Mrs Susan Eduful presided over the court, which convicted Boateng based on his plea.
The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Wisdom Alorwu, told the court that the complainant, Evans Kotey Djanie, was an artiste who lived at Teshie First Junction, while the accused was an Ashaiman resident.
The prosecution claimed that on May 5, 2024, at around 2:00 p.m., the complainant was having voice training in the Teshie Roman neighborhood when the accused, now convicted, approached him and informed him that he (the accused) had traveled from Koforidua to Accra to work but had no place to sleep and needed assistance.
According to the prosecutor, Djanie took Boateng home, left him in his room, and returned for training.
According to the prosecution, the complainant arrived home at 3:30 a.m. and discovered that Boateng had stolen his laptop computer worth GH¢3,500.
On May 19, 2024, around 8:00 p.m., Boateng returned to Teshie and confronted Djanie behind the Teshie Police Station, demanding money without realizing he was the same guy from whom he had stolen the laptop.
According to the prosecution, Djanie forced Boateng out and instructed him to follow him to a Momo vendor for money.
Boateng also forced the complainant to leave and took off running.
According to the prosecution, Djanie called for help, which resulted in Boateng being arrested and led to a police station.
Boateng confirmed the offense in his caution statement and took the police to Ashaiman to retrieve the laptop computer.
