A online version of Truecaller’s caller ID program has been released, offering a number of features to desktop users such as SMS and chat mirroring, call notifications, and number search capabilities. The company stated that the web version, known as Truecaller for Web, will initially only be accessible to Android users in India, but it intends to expand support to other regions in the future.
All Indian users of Truecaller for Android can now utilize a QR code to connect their devices to the web client on a PC or Mac. Truecaller currently only allows one active web session per user and immediately terminates accounts after 30 days of inactivity. Additionally, users can manually de-link a browser from the settings. This is similar to connecting a chat app like Telegram or WhatsApp on the web.
With around 259 million customers, Truecaller’s largest market is India, although it launched the SMS and chat mirroring capability somewhat later than expected. Notably, Microsoft’s Phone Link feature allows users of Android and iPhone to mirror SMS messages on Windows. However, this feature might make it easier for users to obtain one-time passwords (OTPs) for login or to respond to texts fast.
On its website, Truecaller currently provides customers with the option to check up a phone number, but with certain pricing limitations. According to the corporation, customers can now look for numbers on the web client without any restrictions of this kind. When a user receives a call, the web client also shows real-time caller ID notifications.
According to the corporation, 80 million SMS pop-up summary notifications are sent out daily to users. This merely indicates that these individuals haven’t prohibited Truecaller from reading their SMS messages. However, it’s unclear if these people use Truecaller as their main SMS provider.
Truecaller has concentrated on adding additional AI-powered features over the past few months. It released a “Max” feature upgrade for Android customers last month that allowed them to ban all calls from unapproved contacts or spam that AI had identified. After introducing the service in the US the previous year, the company also introduced call recording and AI-powered transcription to India in February.
In October 2023, following a quarter of reduced revenues, the company’s shares fell by 32%. Nonetheless, the company has rebounded from its low point of SEK24.47 ($2.32) and is currently trading at about SEK31.68 ($3).
