The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) has been advised by John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), to put pressure on Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to remove the annoyance levies that the current administration has imposed.
Mahama emphasized the urgency of the matter in his speech to GUTA members and urged Dr. Bawumia, who also represents the New Patriotic Party (NPP), to act now rather than waiting for his election as president. In a prior speech to Ghanaians outlining his presidential ambitions, Dr. Bawumia detailed his proposals to do away with a number of levies, including as the E-Levy, emissions tax, electricity VAT, and betting tax.
Mahama, however, urged GUTA members to hold Dr. Bawumia responsible for his promises and warned them not to put their naive faith in his pledges.“Tell Bawumia to eliminate the E-Levy and other taxes now, not later,” Mahama emphasized during the meeting.
