In response to a widely shared video that showed staff in Tema General Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) straining to care for infants during a power outage, the hospital has taken action.

The event occurred on Tuesday, March 26, when “the facility was relying on its power plant and the power from the national grid was interrupted,” according to Dr. Richard Anthony, the medical director of the facility.
Due to a deficit of GH¢261 million owed to the power distribution business, around 91 hospitals were threatened, leading many social media users to argue that the Electricity business of Ghana (ECG) had severed ties.
The hospital emphasized in the press release that there were no fatalities as a result of the technological issue.

The Tema General Hospital’s attention has been drawn to a video circulating on social media which is reported to have occurred at the Facility.
The facts are as follows:
- The incident happened on Tuesday, 26th March, 2024 when the power from the national grid was interrupted and the Facility was relying on its power plant.
- The dedicated generator set to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) tripped off for a short period and the hospital’s electricians worked to restore power to the Unit until the national grid was restored.
- It must be emphasized that power was restored within two hours by the electricians at the Facility.
- It is worth noting that no lives were lost as a result of this power outage.
