Christiana Awuni, a well-known actress from Kumawood, harshly condemned Bernard Antwi Boasiako, better known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, over his recent comments about Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer’s running partner.
According to reports, Chairman Wontumi made derogatory remarks regarding Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, wrongly asserting that she was from the Central Region rather than the Northern Region and implying that the former vice chancellor of UCC was secretly married to John Mahama.
On March 27, Awuni accused Chairman Wontumi of acting in a tribalistic and disrespectful manner toward successful people in a live broadcast on Accra FM.
“I can’t fathom whether it’s his wealth or something else, but his speech lacks decorum. He shows no regard; he speaks rashly,” she expressed with frustration.
“This isn’t the first instance where he has attacked her like this. If not for political reasons, would he have had the audacity to utter such statements to her face?”
Awuni also sent Chairman Wontumi a strong warning, threatening to take legal action if he keeps picking on the NDC running mate.
“This marks the second time he has verbally assaulted Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, yet she has remained composed. As for me, I’m serving him notice. Should he make any further derogatory remarks about her, the entire nation will witness our clash! I will pursue legal action, and he can expend all his wealth on lawyers,”She said
Awuni’s position is in line with many people and civil society groups that are calling for Chairman Wontumi to issue an unequivocal apology, highlighting the importance of polite conversation in political discourse.
