The government has started building 100 homes for those impacted by the Akosombo Dam spill, according to Minister of Works and Housing Kojo Oppong Nkrumah.
The Minister revealed that on Monday, March 25, 2024, sod was cut for the first 100 dwellings in the Volta Region’s Central and North Tongu Districts.
In the upcoming weeks, he informed Bernard Avle on the Citi Breakfast Show on Citi FM, that representatives from the Ministry’s Housing Department as well as a few contractors and consultants would be stopping by the location to conduct additional work.
In addition, Oppong Nkrumah emphasized the amount of work that must be done before all impacted individuals are appropriately relocated.
“The first step was to provide relief items and when the water levels receded, victims were helped to return to the communities. 88,000 people were affected and over 5,000 homes were affected for these persons, we need to go through with the collection of their particulars to help in resettling them and it is not just about brick and mortar issue, it goes beyond that.
“It is also about schools and reinstating the way of life of the people and so we are going to validate the data that we will collect to ensure their resettlement.”
“We will work with the various assemblies and traditional authorities and we are currently working with them to validate some of the data. We cut sod for 100 homes and we are going to ensure that we do that across the other districts and communities that got affected in the flooding and we will need all the state agencies to come on board.”
