George Darko, the pioneer of burger highlife and legendary musician, passes dead. His highlife recordings are still considered to be some of the most classic and timeless melodies ever.
In order to advance their careers, a number of Ghanaian highlife performers, like George Darko, went to Germany in the 1980s.
He was a lyricist, composer, guitarist, and singer.
He used to perform on stage by himself, but these days, his shows draw crowds of over a hundred people.
When Mr. Darko first gained notoriety in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, highlife music was extremely popular.
His breakthrough song in both Europe and Africa was “Ako Te Brofo,” which translates to “The Parrots Speak/Understand English,” released in 1983.
Among Mr. Darko’s other songs are “Kaakyire Nua,” “Obi Abayewa,” “Medo Menuanom,” “Mensei Da,” “MONI PALAVA,” “Prempremsiwa,” “Bire Bire,” and “Obi Abayewa”.
He is currently a chief in one of the Akuapem communities in the Eastern Region.
