Dr. Promise Sefogah, a prominent Obstetrician Gynaecologist and fertility expert, has disclosed that around half of all pregnancies are unplanned.
He says that this frequently causes couples to experience emotional upheaval, with them debating whether or not to continue the pregnancy.
Unfortunately, many of these unwanted pregnancies are terminated, frequently at the hands of unskilled and unlicensed persons, with severe and often irreparable effects for the women involved.
Dr. Sefogah underscored the terrible effects of unsafe abortions, citing problems ranging from lifelong loss of reproductive function to death.
On Thursday, Dr. Sefogah spoke on Citi TV’s Effective Living Series on Family Planning, Evolving Sexual Trends, and Reproductive Health, and passionately pushed for family planning as a critical tool for preventing these eventualities.
He also suggested a two-year interval between deliveries to enable the woman enough time for physical and mental rehabilitation.
“When we take that step to anticipate and plan for the number of children we want to have and how we want to attain that number, how we want to space them out and the timing of birthing of them, so we can have control over our reproductive life. We will recommend that the children should be at least two years apart. That gives the woman time to recover.”
