Some Black Stars supporters in Ivory Coast have gotten $400 each after earlier threatening to return home owing to unmet expectations.
On Monday, January 15, the impassioned supporters, who had been sent to Ivory Coast by the Ghanaian government to cheer on the Black Stars at the current African Cup of Nations (AFCON 2023), voiced their unhappiness with the organising authorities’ lack of coordination and assistance.
Frustrated by the apparent neglect, some 300 supporters threatened to resign their postings and return to Ghana.
However, a journalist among the fans verified to Citi Eyewitness News that authorities negotiated with the unhappy supporters after they threatened to expose the officials and return to Ghana.
After many rounds of meetings, all of the disappointed supporters were given $400 apiece to resolve their issues.
“There is good news. Yesterday after the story broke, around midnight, infact most of us here went to sleep before the officials came and they came to call us and they gave us what we were due.”
When asked if all of the supporters received $400, the journalist replied, “I am not aware, but what I do know from some of the dwellers [from other hotels] is that they received $400 as well as those at the hotel [I am].”
“For the entire tournament, in fact, officials were unable to tell us, so we don’t know if this [$400] is going to be for the entire tournament.”
