The Ghana Football Association has sought to clarify the air after reports that Black Stars head coach Chris Hughton was physically assaulted by an enraged supporter following Ghana’s loss to Cape Verde in the first game of Afcon 2023.
Following Ghana’s 2–1 defeat against Cape Verde, supporters and followers back home were upset.
Shortly after Hughton and several of Ghana’s contingent arrived at the team hotel, social media users reported that head coach Chris Hughton had been brutally attacked.
According to the stories, diplomats were called in to help calm things down, and the anonymous fan was apprehended by police.
Citi Sports contacted the GFA, who indicated that the purported event had been exaggerated and blown out of proportion.
“The fan only expressed his displeasure over the outcome of the result and told the coach or leave the job.
“There was no physical confrontation and certainly no arrest was made.
Ghana’s Black Stars sit bottom of Group B with no points after the first round of matches and will face Egypt on Thursday, January 18th, in an attempt to get their tournament back on track.
