Shatta Wale, a well-known Ghanaian dancehall rapper, has taken a satirical position on the #PlayGhana movement, which pushes for the promotion and prioritizing of Ghanaian music above foreign sounds.
Despite the recent introduction of the #PlayGhana program by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Creative Arts Agency, and industry partners, Shatta Wale remains skeptical of its usefulness.
On Sunday, December 17, 2023, he tweeted that artists are unable to stop alien music from taking over the nation. According to Shatta Wale, even ten percent of foreign music will eclipse the whole Ghanaian music industry.
Moreover, Shatta Wale identified envy as a major obstacle and linked internal disputes among Ghanaian musicians to the music industry’s sluggish development. He declared,
“A country with so much jealousy when it’s not them in the frontline.”
In an endeavor to elevate and accentuate the vibrant sounds of Ghanaian music, the Creative Arts Agency has urged DJs and music producers to give local music top priority over the holiday season.
