The Mobile Money Advocacy Group has stated that action is being taken to resolve incidents of fraud against its members.
The association criticized the situation, noting the detrimental effects on transaction volume and the restricted number of agents available at particular times of day and in specific places.
The guarantee was issued following the arrest of a police officer, General Constable Ernest Agyemang Darko, on November 29, 2023, for defrauding a mobile money agency of GH14,460 in Kasoa.
Stephen Gorman, Director of Operations at the Mobile Money Advocacy Group, advised mobile money agents to remain careful in their area of work in an interview with Citi News.
“With regard to the fraud that happened in Kasoa, the police officer actually had the money on him, but I think the agent also didn’t follow the normal protocol of doing the business. In our business, you are supposed to take the money first, count, and be sure of the amount before a deposit is made. However, there is an arrangement for the officer to pay back the money to the agent, and it will be paid in instalments.”
The Northern MoMo Agents Association of Ghana (NOMAAG), the Mobile Money Advocacy Group (MOMAG), the Mobile Money Agents Association of Ghana (MMAAG), and the ABAG have also announced a temporary solution that limits cash withdrawals to GH1,000 per transaction.
The cap decision went into effect on December 1, 2023.
In a joint statement, the groups said that the interim measure is designed to call attention to their long-standing complaints about inadequate reimbursement for their services.
