Environmental health workers in Ghana have urged the government to provide them with immediate assistance in carrying out their responsibilities as sanitation and health practitioners.
The workers expressed concern about the lack of logistics and infrastructure, which limits their ability to handle health-related issues in the country.
Florence Kuukyii, Metro Public Environmental Health Officer for the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, said at the Environmental Health Day Celebration on September 26, 2023
“Today’s environmental health worker is being neglected by the government. We have been neglected infrastructure-wise, logistics-wise, and all the others.”
Kwabena Owusu Amissah, a senior health tutor with the Accra School of Hygiene’s Environmental Health Department at Korle-Bu, echoed the request for help “It is incumbent upon us as responsible citizens and leaders to recognize the importance of supporting the work of environmental health officers.”
Environmental health workers play an important role in preserving public health by assuring safe and hygienic waste disposal, monitoring air and water quality, and avoiding disease spread. Their effort, however, is frequently underestimated and undervalued.
